Parkville Flood of 1993This month, we talk about the weather, and specifically about flooding. There's a lot of talk about the month of March's entrance and egress in the company of various fauna, and in this installment of Science Club, we'll see if it's merited!

Our Weather: Managing Floods

The Kansas City area has certainly seen significant flooding over the years, especially in Parkville.

This month in science club we will explore different methods of managing flood waters.

John Ogren, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, will provide a hands-on demonstration of a floodplain model.

Club members will be able to explore different soil and ground conditions, including wetlands and parking lots. They will also use a variable rainmaker to simulate several real world scenarios to compare different flood prevention measures including increased wetlands, levee systems, and retention ponds.

Best of all, we will be able to immediately see the results of our planning. Will we save the town, or will homes and cars get washed away?
