H.M.S. Beagle High School Students' Science Alliance: February, 2010 Meeting

February, 2010

This month's program is "Ask the Astrophysicist" with UMKC's Dr. Daniel McIntosh.

Dr Daniel McIntosh, our speaker for February. Please bring any and all questions about space, galaxies, the universe, or anything "astro."

Dr. McIntosh is an empirical astronomer interested in the origins and evolution of galaxies in a cosmological context. His latest work uses world-class ground and space-based observatories to understand the assembly and growth of galaxies over cosmic time. The evolution of the galaxy population reveals important aspects of the history of the universe. He currently leads a new team undertaking a comprehensive study of the observed properties of gravitational encounters between galaxies and their subsequent merging and by-products.

Dr. McIntosh's specific areas of study include: 1) Galaxy-galaxy mergers and interactions; 2) Galaxy bimodality and athe buildup of massive galaxies; 3) Cosmological environments and dark matter; and Mining multi-wavelength extragalactic surveys.
