Come out to enjoy a day of food, rockets, fun, and a night of astronomical observing, all in commemoration of the first manned spaceflight (12 April 1961, more information). In conjunction with KCAR, the Kansas City Association of Rocketry, we'll be launching rockets, eating great food, then enjoying a special night of observing and a special showing of the film "October Skies", based on the book Rocket Boys by Homer Hickham. Members of the public are welcome to join us for all activities (outdoor activities, of course, are weather-dependent).
Our Yuri's Night party is just one of many being held around the world on or near the anniversary of the first human spaceflight. For more information, please check out the official Yuri's Night website.
Bring your rockets, your telescopes, your curiosity and enthusiasm and come join us! We look forward to seeing you!

Here's an event that we wholeheartedly support and endorse, especially in the light of our many patrons who are keen birders. The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual event "...that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds." So take a few minutes, logon to Birdcount.org, and find out what you can do to help. It's a great way to learn something about the birds which you might find - quite literally - in your own back garden.
H.M.S. Beagle celebrated its fifth anniversary of doing business in October, 2009. We want to thank all of you who have come into the store or shopped with us online for your patronage, and look forward to many more years to come.
The Beagle's entry in the 2008 Fourth of July Parade was a very low-key Prius, in keeping with the 2008 Parade theme, "Going Green..." In retrospect, we should have spent more time on the decorations...
